PARTY PRIMARIES: THE WAVE OF ONE MAN SHOW, THE INJUSTICE AND THE BITTERNESS IN PARTY POLITICS by comr. Onyeabor chisom justice (khalifa)
"The voice of the masses is the voice of God," goes the aged-long saying. In the realm of party primaries, and in our contemporary times, this proverb is no longer obtainable. When one person's whim holds sway over the fate of the entire party, democracy, as we claim to have it, is reduced to mere façade.
Such a practice is akin to dictatorship, where a person's whim determines the course of the collective persons. Those who are handpicked by the "emperor" are but puppets on strings with one person pulling the marionette's handle. This is neither a representation of democracy nor is it having semblance of fairness.
What does this portend? A dearth of fresh ideas, lack of representation, and a party that's woefully out of touch with its acclaimed base.
The party ought to be the vehicle through which people will and aspirations are actualised, not the now turned personal empire of an individual and their vassals. John Smith once quoted, "When one person's opinion becomes the only one that matters, we might as well be living in a monarchy." Unfortunately, this is no monarchy and one person's whim and caprice reigns supreme. Very disappointing turn of events.
Politics calls for service, service to the people. With the level of bitterness being employed in the scheme and practice of party politics, one wonders the purpose of venturing into such.
The effects of running a demi-god party activities are far-reaching. Purposeful candidates are relegated to the background, service-driven innovations and policies are stifled, sacrificed on the altar of favouritism, while the party's legitimacy is called into question, and ultimately, eroded. As the saying goes, "power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
With representation in the real sense of it at the grassroots at the core of recent national discourse and judicial adjudication, one expected every political party to be toe the line of actual party primaries. While some put up a front in this regard, others flagrantly chose to be unfortunate by having one person decide for all. How disappointing.
The questions begging for answers now are; where is the future of the party? Should we continue this way? And why should we call ourselves a political party with revered members yet there's no trace of internal democracy? With the country the way it is and people are calling on committed individuals to step up to the plate and rescue the country, what message are we pushing to them to join the party?
Without power resting with the people, every other thing is null and void and of no consequence.
Finally, humans will manipulate, humans will remain crafty and calculating, and destiny may be delayed, but certainly, it can never be denied.
